Islam, Empire of Faith, The Awakening

 Carolyn (Lynn) Killean, PhD

We are fortunate to have Lynn Killean, who taught Arabic at the University of Chicago to share her perspectives on the contribution and influence of Islam.  She will use and discuss an episode from the PBS series.  Two of the experts featured in the series are her former students.


Dr. Killean received a doctorate in Linguistics from the University of Michigan after having acquired two masters degrees in linguistics and Near Eastern Studies.   She taught at the University of Chicago for 29 years as an Associate Professor in the departments of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and Linguistics and the College.  

She was the recipient of a Title VI NDEA graduate fellowship for five years and also received post-doctoral grants from the American Research Center in Egypt and the Fulbright Commission   She has lived in Egypt for a total of two and a half years, Jordan for one y ear and Syria for one month.  

She retired in l996 and moved to Houston to become an after-school grandmother and part-time adjunct professor at North Harris College where, for several years, she taught ESL to adults.  Currently she is an ESL tutor in the Woodlands

Stanley Tookie Williams, a leader of the Crips gang of Los Angeles,  died by injection at 12:01 a.m. P.S.T. Tuesday.  It took minutes to find a vein.  1,2,3,4 what are we fighting for? NYT: President Bush hailed Iraq’s coming election as a “remarkable event in the Arab world” but said that the voting would not bring an end to violence. More from the NYT: Supreme Court to Hear Dispute on Texas Redistricting The court will decide the validity of a much-disputed Congressional map that cost the state’s Democrats five seats in Congress.  (They did such a good job in Florida Election) Chron:Vioxx mistrial means trouble for Merck, experts say.  Chron: Powerful earthquakes strike under sea near Fiji and officials issued a tsunami alert for the local area.

Started in January 2000, We are about personal empowerment through demystification.  Our subject matter is broad but it always tries to be about understanding ourselves and others better; and, having fun.

Parking: May I suggest that you park in the “West Parking Area” , as that parking area  is closer to Building B.  Ignore the “Instructors Only” signs on the parking,  That only applies on week days.
