This is the third session of the 2016-17 Academic Year. There will be five sessions in the fall semester; plus one in June.
To help you start putting things back into perspective, you might enjoy watching the first 11 minutes of Stephen Colbert’s opening bit Monday night (Nov 14) Warning: Colbert’s satire creatively edits in bits from the CBS 60 Minutes Trump Interview air on Sunday (Nov 13). We’ll watch it in Class. On YouTube it is in 2 parts.
I spent most of Election Day passing our push cards for a friend of mine who was running as a Democrat for Constable of Harris County precinct 4 while my wife was Alternate Election Judge for the 6th Voting Precinct. By the time we had dismantled the voting setup and headed out to a watch party it was 9 pm . We had gotten a glance of the TV at what was happening when we left the house and it was puzzling. By the time we got home after the party the deed was done. When the Donald Trump was about to make his victory speech, I turned off the TV.
I was so stunned I didn’t turn on the TV or radio all the next day until the evening news! I was angry! As you know I wasn’t a fan of either Clinton or Trump, but with the positive reinforcement of the pundits I had resigned myself to having another Clinton in the White House. But all the emotional energy turned out to have been wasted!
Then, Sunday I saw Trump and his family interviewed on 60 minutes, perhaps a leopard can actually change its spots, because the Donald Trump I saw calmly responding to Lesley Stahl bore little resemblance to the Donald Trump who had verbally abused and humiliated 14 other Republican hopefuls in the course of the last year and a half.
Then I saw the video of the Trumps’ planned 15 minute to WhiteHouse turn into 90 minutes and a mini press conference. And, Obama giving assurances of a smooth transition and Obama saying he is looking forward to it as well staying in contact in the future. WOW.
Obama then left for Greece to start his last tour of the EU and to assure our allies that everything will be good under a Trump administration and a Republican Congress.
Trump’s tone of voice is very assuring, but it still doesn’t offer much content. But that is not stopping the news media from conjecturing creatively about just about everything. Trump told Stahl that his first priority will be fixes to ObamaCare (previous conditions accepted, adult children at home can be included.) Immigration ( 2 or 3 million illegals who have committed crimes --- if he can find that many, to be somehow deported. And, Tax reform. (Simply and Lower) (Nothing mentioned about balancing the budget.)
Election Results: (as of 11 pm, 15 Nov)
Bring your insights and your concerns to Third Saturday Seminar on Saturday and we will Share.
As usual, our world is still in “interesting times” We will start the session with Current Events (Distractions)
In last Month's Meeting notice I included:
“… Lichtman's prediction isn't based on horse-race polls, shifting demographics or his own political opinions. Rather, he uses a system of true/false statements he calls the "Keys to the White House" to determine his predicted winner.
And this year, he says, Donald Trump is the favorite to win. (GO FIGURE!)”
Well, he was the only one who was right!
ALISON STEWART, PBS NEWSHOUR WEEKEND ANCHOR: In all nine presidential elections since 1984, American University history professor Allan Lichtman has correctly predicted the outcome not by using opinions polls but by using a system he helped create, 13 simple true/false statements testing whether the incumbent party will retain or lose the White House.
Third Saturday Seminars – Fall 2016 – 3 Sessions
To refer to an ancient Chinese saying, “our world is in interesting times” and individual citizens are assaulted with a blinding array of propaganda from every conceivable source. The Third Saturday Seminar is about demystification of what is going on around us. Time will also be spent on current events.
